Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a holistic body-mind therapy developed by Dr. Peter Levine, specifically designed to heal trauma through increased awareness and regulation of the nervous system. At Neuroceptive Learning, we integrate SE into our therapeutic practices to help individuals manage and overcome the effects of trauma.
Somatic Experiencing® is based on the premise that trauma is not just a psychological issue but is also deeply rooted in the body’s physiological responses. Traumatic experiences can overwhelm the nervous system, leading to dysregulation and a host of physical and emotional symptoms. SE aims to address these symptoms by helping individuals become more aware of their bodily sensations, feelings, and movements.
The core of Somatic Experiencing® involves guiding individuals to reconnect with their bodies and develop a heightened awareness of their internal states. By focusing on bodily sensations, SE practitioners help clients release pent-up energy and restore the natural balance of the nervous system. This process involves several key steps.
First, clients are encouraged to tune into their bodies, noticing and describing their physical sensations without judgment or analysis. This practice helps build a stronger connection between the mind and body. Following this, a technique known as pendulation is employed, which involves moving between states of tension and relaxation. This allows the nervous system to process and integrate traumatic experiences gradually.
Through gentle guidance, clients then release stored energy from the body, which may manifest as shaking, trembling, or other physical movements. This discharge helps reset the nervous system. Finally, clients focus on grounding techniques to help stabilise and integrate the new, regulated state of their nervous system.
Somatic Experiencing® is particularly important for trauma recovery because it addresses the root cause of trauma – dysregulation of the nervous system. By focusing on the body’s physical responses, SE provides a comprehensive approach to healing that complements traditional talk therapies. It helps individuals reduce symptoms of trauma by releasing stored tension and energy, which can alleviate anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
